Though not often seen as a first option by physicians, physical therapy is a suitable alternative or adjunctive therapy to typical treatments performed by physicians for these conditions.
The pelvic floor is a complicated area of the body that can be affected by many conditions or related factors (shown below).
The affects may cause muscles and connective tissue to weaken or become injured.
Organ dysfunction such as Interstitial Cystitis or Prostatitis, and hormonal changes can also affect pelvic floor muscle function.
Pelvic Floor dysfunction often contributes to a variety of quality of life issues.
In addition to effecting daily bladder and bowel functions, it may also impact one's self-esteem and intimacy, and be so debilitating and painful, that it limits one's activities.
Having a child experience difficulty with bowel/bladder control can be an emotional situation for both the parent and child.
It is often difficult to understand the dysfunction as a parent and frustrating not knowing how to help.
Children are often left feeling shame and embarrassed, sometimes leading to behavioral changes.
Like the adult pelvis, the pelvic floor muscles in children help support the bowel, bladder and abdominal organs.
The pelvic floor muscles provide a supportive sling to these organs and ideally provide control of urine and feces and to assist elimination.
Pregnancy is a great time of change for the body and those changes occur rapidly!
Posture changes occur during pregnancy that can lead to back, muscle, and joint pain.
Hormonal changes cause ligament loosening and increased mobility in the joints that prepare mothers to give birth but, sometimes the extra mobility can create joint problems.
Physical Therapy is effective in treating musculoskeletal conditions that can commonly occur during all phases of pregnancy.
Julie offers a variety of treatment techniques and modalities to help mothers prepare for delivery and postpartum recovery.
