Speech-language therapy is the treatment for most children with speech and/or language disorders.
A speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas.
When a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely (expressive language), then he or she may have a language disorder.
What a word means (i.e.: "star" can refer to a bright object in the night sky or a celebrity).
Therapy360 offers Occupational Therapy at our Greenville and Columbia locations.
Occupational Therapy focuses on motor skills, handwriting and fine motor, and sensory integration.
Deficits in motor skills may be a result of developmental delay or traumatic injury.
These injuries or delays may impair a child's ability to self-feed, sit-up, reach, hold a crayon/pencil to color or write, balance, or play with toys just to name a few.
Occupational therapists address these challenges to increase range of motion, flexibility, overall muscle strength, coordination, and functional posture.
Our therapists are qualified to provide feeding therapy for all ages (birth through adults), though our primary expertise is in the area of infant and child feeding.
After a thorough review of the medical and feeding history you provide, a Speech-Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist will sit down with you and your child to observe a meal or snack and further assess oral motor skills, seating positions, and behavior during meal time.
If your child qualifies for therapy, you will then speak with our office manager to schedule regular visits.
Social groups provide the opportunity for children to interact with peers, while learning appropriate pragmatic language skills.
The group activities vary greatly, depending on the age of the children within the group.
For example, a preschool group may be more play-based, where children learn appropriate play, turn-taking, and conversational exchange.
A group of older children may target reading social cues, interpretation of non-verbal language, and understanding peer relationships.
If you are interested in obtaining more information about social groups, please call the office nearest you.
