Deirdre McDowell, PLLC is a small physical therapy practice that specializes in helping babies and young children move well. We are a concierge type of service that provides clinically advanced physical therapy intervention, assistance in finding and scheduling appointments with other rehabilitation specialists (including accompaniment to their office when requested to insure more optimal collaboration or communication), and home visits to assess and adjust rehabilitation-related equipment.
Our clients are always seen within 24 hours of their initial request, and each client is provided with direct ongoing access to their therapist. Yes, that means you can always reach them on their cell phone. Instead of getting on a highway, battling traffic and rushing from one place to another, just put your child in the stroller or in the bike seat and come on down.
We are on a quiet street in the Houston Heights, just around the corner from Harvard Elementary. Meet other moms, have an espresso, relax, and learn some great ways to help your child.

Services
I graduated from Texas Woman's University in 1987 and have been a practicing pediatric physical therapist for more than 20 years.
After working in both hospital-based and outpatient environments, I served as the consulting therapist for CHOSEN Clinic, a medically fragile and multiply handicapped children's clinic operated by The University of Texas Health Science Center Houston.
The experience and the professional relationships established while at UTHSC Houston continue to be invaluable, and enable me to freely contact and discuss issues with other specialists when devising a comprehensive plan of care.

This practice arose out of a desire to help children diagnosed with pediatric disability and their families make sense out of the jumble of information and misinformation out there.
If you are a parent of a child who needs physical therapy but does not know where to go, which questions to ask, or how to find a qualified therapist that best suits your child or family, this is a good place to start.
Our primary objective is to help children learn to move well- period.
The second objective is to show families where to find reliable information, how to find particular well-qualified specialists, and how to put all that information together.

Nobody knows a child better than their family.
That's why I believe in a collaborative approach, working together with the family and other clinicians as necessary to identify and meet each child's functional needs.
This includes helping families make confident and informed therapy-related choices.
I'm also available to assist fellow clinicians and professionals who are working to develop and/or improve pediatric physical therapy services in their own locations.
As a member of the Exceptional Clinicians Collaboration, I'm extremely committed to enhancing and improving the lives of children with disability or injury worldwide.

All services are available on a cash-pay basis, and patients are given an appropriate invoice for submission to their insurance company.
In most cases, families are reimbursed by their insurance at the out of network rate (between 60 and 80% of the normal and customary charge for physical therapy services).
When paying with cash, I do not require a co-pay, and my fees are less than most facilities.
Typically this means families pay the same or LESS than they would using their insurance, although you should always check with your provider.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities has estimated that as many as 400,000 children born each year are at risk for some form of early motor delay.
Of these, approximately one of every forty children will have some true motor delay.
Why is this important?
While difficulty obtaining motor milestones seems to be simply about movement, it is not.
Infants and children learn many things through movement.
Put simply, they learn about themselves and their environment, how things all fit together (spacial relationships), how to interact and communicate, and how to calm themselves and feel secure.
